Bill Would End Ohio’s Income Tax, CAT

01/26/2024

New legislation offered in the Ohio House and Senate would phase out the state’s personal income tax and commercial activity tax (CAT) by 2030. Senate Bill 216 and a forthcoming House plan would make Ohio the tenth state to abandon the income tax. Eliminating both taxes would cost the state around $13 billion in revenue, representing a significant percentage of the current General Revenue Fund budget. But Sen. George Lang (R-West Chester), a sponsor of the Senate bill, predicted Ohio’s economy would grow from $750 billion to $1 trillion by 2030, and Ohio’s population would grow enough to regain a 16th congressional seat.
