Update: This week, the United Steelworkers sent a 156-page petition to Governor Kasich requesting that he intervene and prevent future layoffs which will be linked to AEP-Ohio’s recent capacity and rate case increases. The letter to the Governor states, “[w]e, the signees of these documents, are asking for your help in brokering some type of agreement for a reduction in power cost that would allow Ormet Corporation to continue operations and thus retain the 1000 jobs at Ormet, plus the thousands of indirect jobs of the surrounding communities.” As you are likely aware, the PUCO and AEP-Ohio developed an agreement several years ago which has allowed Ormet to benefit from a discount. If Ormet were to get a new deal with AEP-Ohio, it would have to be approved by the PUCO, and would result in a new charge for other customers in AEP-Ohio’s service territory. We will continue to monitor this case and provide updates accordingly.
